United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee: Client Story
Starting point.
The USOPC commissioned The People Academy as their partner leading up to the Rio Olympics in 2016, to provide a major part of the National Team Coach Leadership Development Program (NTCLEP) for cohorts of elite coaches. USOPC recognised that being an elite coach was so much more than knowing your sport, and that knowing yourself as a coach, and understanding those that you coach, was crucial to Olympic and medal success. Our work with the NTCLEP started with a cohort of 10 elite coaches at the LA Galaxy Stadium in Los Angeles in 2014.
What we did.
People Academy’s involvement in the program focused on the coach and their relationships with their athletes, wider team, and stakeholders. Our interactions helped the coaches have a greater understanding of themselves through psychometrics, People Academy’s People Dimension, significant 1-to-1 coaching, co-coaching groups, webinars, the approach including developing high performing team environments, knowing what good looks like, and peer to peer feedback. We worked with mixed cohorts from both summer and winter sports, and this has continued every year since 2014 with a new cohort.
The result.
Since 2014, we’ve helped develop 108 elite coaches, 48 of which had athletes or teams that medalled at Summer or Winter Olympics, in 24 sports, winning 71 medals.
In addition, and because of the NTCLEP program, People Academy has now worked with many National Governing Bodies in US sport, many involving athlete-coach relationship development, and some of them involving leadership and culture development for the wider sport. This work in US sport continues to the current day.
We are in the process of creating an online program for the USOPC where our People Dimension content will be made available globally to a wider audience. This is scheduled for release later in 2024.
